cruising through the city after hours

hello folks, it is finally time for the malamiko industrial complex newsletter (volume 4). it has been a busy month and a half since we last checked in so i got a whole bunch of words to share.

members of malamiko, fend, and another heaven huddled up together in front of a brick wall to celebrate the tour kickoff show

first: tour is over, and boy are our arms tired. our kick-off show with another heaven was such a perfect night. fend and another heaven are my two favorite bands in town, so booking them both on this show was so special to me. hanging out with fend and seeing them play 5 times in a week was also such a magical experience — i will truly never grow tired of seeing them.

planning this tour was nerve-wracking, but it was nice to take some time away, travel around, meet new people, connect with long distance friends, and most importantly, play a bunch of arcade games at galloping ghost during our day off in chicago (thanks to ali and monica for the recommendation). lately i have been trying to hone in my fighting game skills so i was having an absolute blast trying out different cabinets (i think my games are guilty gear and marvel vs capcom, but i’m hoping to dig into street fighter and killer instinct a bit more).

we also got plenty of shopping in – mainly bookstores and movie/game stores (and we all got some reading in).

ryan finished the woman in the dunes by kōbō abe (coincidentally, john o’brien of fend also brought it with him to read on tour and they both finished it on the same night, unplanned) and started chain-gang all-stars by nana kwame adjei-brenyah

bought: (books) the ruined map by kōbō abe and project hail mary by andy weir

rhys started kitchen confidential by anthony bourdain.

bought: (books) free jazz by ekkehard jost, i’ll never write my memoirs by grace jones, kraftwerk: future music from germany by uwe schutte, dubliners by james joyce. (cds) 5 style by 5 style, promise of love by american analog set, the globe by big audio dynamite, plastic fang by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. (video games) street fighter 30th anniversary collection (a recommendation from daisy)

daisy finished crash by j.g. ballard, picked up some godzilla dvds (mothra and king ghidorah: giant monsters all-out attack, tokyo s.o.s., against mechagodzilla, and final wars), and got some ps2 games (twisted metal: black and ico). i’ve been slowly working through the entire godzilla filmography (recently finished the shōwa era and i absolutely adore shinand minus one), but i have yet to see any of the heisei or millenium era. i played shadow of the colossus for the first time last month, so seeing a copy of ico in a local game store was serendipitous. also, i can’t fully explain why but i have a deep fascination for the twisted metal series, and i never owned black as a kid.

announcements: we have new music coming!

june 20th: for the song you saved: a tribute to deftones. its no secret that ryan and daisy are both nü metal appreciators, so being asked to contribute was a wonderful opportunity. i can’t wait for you all to hear it!

june 28th: tern & crow 5 year anniversary comp featuring our new song sanctuary city, or Serenity Is a Pointed Gun(which you may have heard at a recent show).

i forgot to put this in last month’s newsletter, but our ear coffee performance is on youtube, so if you haven’t seen that, please check it out.
