so come on, davey, sing me something that i know
hello and welcome back to the malamiko industrial complex newsletter (volume 5). it is officially summer, which means nothing in particular. here are some updates.

music: we released two new songs this month. the first one is a cover of sextape by deftones. i wrote a blurb about the song on the bandcamp page:
i need to preface this with the following: deftones is not a shoegaze band. whoever began this trend of calling them shoegaze, grungegaze, or the like has done irreparable damage to society! anyways, despite ryan and daisy’s deep love and appreciation for the ignorant nü metal riffs of early deftones, we knew that if we had to decide on a deftones song that it would have to be one of the dreamy, ethereal, wall of sound selections from their discography. we also tried to play into our strong suits: keep the number of guitar tracks down to a reasonable amount, lean into dynamics, throw some shimmery guitars into the mix, and please don’t pick a song where chino moans a bunch.
some other fun facts: the song is tuned to drop c and i didn’t have a spare guitar to retune at the time, so i asked to borrow a guitar from ali (who recorded the song). he set up one of his guitars for drop c but forgot to bring it with him to the recording space so we just retuned a different guitar (i believe it was his jazzmaster), recorded the main guitar part before it got too out of whack, and i recorded all the lead lines in standard tuning on my ibanez roadcore.

the second one is sanctuary city, or Serenity Is a Pointed Gun. recorded by dav from falcon arrow for the tern and crow 5th anniversary release. this is our shortest song but longest song title. it is also the first time malamiko has ever been pressed to vinyl!

mic extended universe: if anyone missed the jim o’rourke tribute show that rhys put together, there is a video up on youtube (dot com). there will hopefully be more tribute sets from the gang to come eventually, but in the meantime keep an eye out for some upcoming shows and releases from rhys’s solo project dream colors.

house show headaches: we have had some really bad luck with house shows this summer due to outdoor shows getting rained out, landlords selling the property and evicting the tenants, and venues being shut down by the city/property management.
pink place received a cease and desist from property management just days after the anita velveeta residency was announced for next month, so these shows are currently up in the air. there is a petition for pink place if you would like to show your support (these were planned to be the final shows for the venue). we will send updates once we have more information.
okay that’s all for now.
mmfwml,
